Nets get: SG/SF K.J. McDaniels
Rockets get: Trade exception, cash considerations
There seemed to be little reason to make this move, which simply dealt away K.J. for nothing. Houston wasn't hard-pressed against the cap, and they didn't desperately need to open up a roster spot or anything. All-in-all, they just coughed up the low-risk/high-reward/low-probability McDaniels, which just about sums him up (for more on K.J, click the above link for Brooklyn's Trade Grades).
Especially with Corey Brewer being traded away on the same day, there was no reason why GM Daryl Morey chose to weaken his wing depth further, which is exactly what this trade does. Particularly if Harden, Patrick Beverley, and new acquisition Lou Williams spend a lot of minutes at point guard, that really leaves only Sam Dekker behind the injury-risk duo of Eric Gordon and Trevor Ariza. Thus holding onto McDaniels, whether it be for security reasons in a worst-case scenario or just for his potential long-term upside, made sense. Which is why this trade didn't.
